Maxwell Underground is a coking coal development project located in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales. The project is within the Upper Hunter coal corridor which contains a number of operating coal mines and development projects.
The relevant tenement is NSW Exploration Licence (EL) 5460. The boundary of the Tenement is approximately 10 kilometres (km) east of Denman and 11 km south of Muswellbrook.
Coal from the Maxwell underground project will be processed through the adjacent Maxwell infrastructure area (formally known as the Drayton Open Cut). The existing infrastructure area was established in the early 1980’s to service the Drayton Open Cut and includes a coal preparation plant, train load out, administration area and workshops. The Drayton open cut workings are currently being rehabilitated.
Underground Project Only
At Malabar’s request, the company’s commitments, which include to only mine underground and to relinquish the portion of the EL to the south of the Golden Highway, have been written into the EL and are now legally binding.
Malabar Coal also appreciates that the NSW Government has added an additional layer of protection, a State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP), that is designed to provide additional certainty that only an underground project can be developed in that area.
